About Us
I am Rajan Achary, the founder and proprietor of Alackal Bell Metals. Raised in the Alackal family, our roots trace back to ancestors who migrated from Tamilnadu to Mannar in the mid-18th century to specialize in temple craftsmanship. The tradition of honing skills in bronze and brass continued within my family, contributing to Mannar's renown for such artisanal works.
My upbringing involved witnessing the intricate process of my forefathers crafting lamps and idols for temples. During my school days, I apprenticed under Sri. Chellappan Achary, my godfather, in his artistic endeavors. Upon completing my post-secondary education at 19, I embarked on my own journey, guided by his mentorship.
In my mid-twenties, I established Alackal Bell Metal Works, a company steeped in our hereditary legacy, employing 10 artisans. At that time, the Uruli emerged as the most sought-after product, leading us to specialize in its creation, primarily catering to the Malabar region.
Over the years, our workforce expanded to 40 skilled individuals, allowing us to diversify into temple craftsmanship. Notable contributions include Aalvilakku for Sabarimala Sri Ayyappa Temple (1993), more than 15 large cooking varpu for Guruvayur Temple (2005), the Bell for Attukal Devi Temple, Trivandrum (2022), and Deepasthambham in Chettikkulangara Devi Temple (2010).
Our portfolio extends to providing Bells, Kodimaram (Flag posts), and Menorahs for churches like Edapplly Church and numerous others across Kerala. Our artistic creations find a place of honor in museums and art galleries, with a notable presence in the Bhopal Museum.
Internationally, our products have been exhibited in countries such as the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Oman, and more. Witnessing customers worldwide find joy in our products within their homes is a source of great delight.
In 2017, I opened a shop in Mannar town, sharing the same name, providing a space for direct interaction with customers and showcasing our products. With a dedicated team of 20 artisans still working in our workshop, I am pleased to witness the new generation embracing and perpetuating our traditional skills, preserving our legacy, and embracing our cultural heritage.
